    Warning!!! Ontario Not for Profits that have been charities for many years are going to find it almost impossible to update the provisions in their charter. The province is not only requiring updates to comply with ONCA but also with a number of other recently passed provincial Acts, like the Charities Accounting Act, ect. Consider re-incorporating federally to avoid the confusing mess in Ontario.

    If the original raster is scaled by 0.1 then to change it to its original size shouldn't we have to multiply it by 10 rather than 0.1?

    • @Ontario_Nature
      @Ontario_Nature 6 місяців тому

      The original raster was scaled by a factor of 10 (based on the Spawn et al. 2020 paper that ORNL DAAC included in their user guide about the dataset, the authors stated that it was to reduce file size). The user guide states “Scaling: 0.1” indicating that we need to multiply the values of the original raster by 0.1. Unless you are using the aboveground or belowground biomass dataset from ORNL DAAC, you won’t need to complete this step.

    Thank you for the video its very helpful, but I wanted to find out how to get the Future LULC data, that is indicated in the InVEST model interphase. or how can it be acquired for an area of interest, thank you

    • @Ontario_Nature
      @Ontario_Nature 6 місяців тому

      We didn’t model future land cover, but have come across a dataset of predicted global land cover created by Clark Labs and published by Esri in 2021 (hub.arcgis.com/datasets/esri::land-cover-2050-global/about). Note that there are only 10 land cover classes (which is different from the land cover dataset used in our example), and not every country is included. Keep in mind that any model of future land cover will have limitations.

    We do have some grass snakes here and once we did see a "milk" snake a few years ago .We have vernal ponds and enjoy the peeping in the spring! Sometimes turtles have passed through and this summer a female snapping turtle was seen resting on our neighbors driveway!There is an old gully between us and our neighbor which is probably an attraction to creatures because it usually will have a few inches of water even throughout the summer. Thanks; always good that others are interested in this subject. Yours ,R.L.

    I found a salamander on the cement floor in the garage! Where am I supposed to bring him? Will he be ok if I bring him under some logs close to the water? What do they do in the winter months?

    • @Ontario_Nature
      @Ontario_Nature 8 місяців тому

      Hi Rosane, We do apologize for the delayed reply and not noticing your question about this until now. If it is a common species such as a blue-spotted or spotted salamander, you could contact an animal rescue centre to see if they can further help: www.ontariowildliferescue.ca/wildlifecentres/ if it is a species at risk you should also notify the Natural Resources Information Centre: 1-800-667-1940. The salamanders overwinter below surface level so would need significant extra help to survive over winter outside of natural conditions.

    Could you tell me is there any specific symbology for carbon maps? And could you tell me if it is necessary to save the red area around the Peninsula in carbon map ?

    • @Ontario_Nature
      @Ontario_Nature 6 місяців тому

      As far as I’m aware, there isn’t a specific symbology for carbon maps! Often organizations will use a green/yellow/brown colour ramp, to symbolically represent the carbon cycle. The red area around Black Bay Peninsula was because the output created by InVEST is a raster (and a grid gets created around the entire area), but you can clip the raster to your area of interest.

    Just one question... Could I do the same thing that InVEST does with just ArcGIS?...

    • @Ontario_Nature
      @Ontario_Nature Рік тому

      InVEST is a fairly simple carbon model so hypothetically you could get similar results using ArcGIS if you already have carbon pool data. ArcGIS doesn’t have a tool like InVEST. However, this would also be a fairly simple calculation in ArcGIS (adding all the carbon storage values across your area of interest; note that you would likely need to ensure the resolution is the same for each carbon pool layer, and there will likely be other things to consider if you’re doing a calculation like this in ArcGIS!).

    If one possesses a fishing license in the Province of Ontario, is it legal or illegal to capture turtles, to keep as pets? From what I understand, it's perfectly legal to capture Snapping Turtles (which is currently classified as "Special Concern"), provided one has a fishing license, for consumption; which I think is fucking nuts!

    I hope the 10% of managed forest land that will be set aside under this plan isn't simply marginal land that wouldn't be logged either way. Logging companies obviously don't log 100% of all the land they own. So maybe they're just getting credit for something they already do. And I hope the network of conserved land isn't too fractured. Good idea to permanently protect it though.

    • @Ontario_Nature
      @Ontario_Nature Рік тому

      These are all great points. When creating designated conservation lands (DCLs), forest management companies must consider conservation values like connectivity, species at risk, and cultural significance of the site. Some of the DCLs within forest management units (FMU) aren't ideal for harvesting (e.g., wetlands) and some, of course are. However, protecting 10% of the FMU is just a minimum threshold for FSC certification and permanently protecting these sites ensures that forestry companies can't harvest and move them around.
